Consideration of flood risks
for Lines 15 West and 15 East In accordance with Société du Grand Paris’s
flood management strategy, structures in
a flood risk zone are raised, where possible,
to a higher level than that required by the
regulations (the 100-year reference flood
from the flood risk prevention plans), thus
protecting them from higher flood levels.
These requirements have been incorporated
into the design-build contracts for these
two lines.
Study on the climate resilience
of the Grand Paris Express
to be launched in 2021 A specific consultation was conducted from
17 November to 7 December 2020 to identify
the strategic issues for the new metro’s
stakeholders. Climate change adaptation
was identified as one of the main concerns
of the large panel consulted in 2020/2021.
A more in-depth study on the analysis of
the Grand Paris Express’s vulnerability to
climate change and its adaptation to it will be
launched in 2021. It will assess the measures
already integrated into the project’s design
and provide a basis for developing a resilience
and adaptation plan.
ACTION 18 Anticipate risks linked to climate change
Climate change may lead to extreme weather events like heat waves, flooding and droughts
followed by heavy rains that cause run-off or landslides. It is therefore essential to make the
region more resilient (increase its capacity to adapt to the risks it faces) to protect residents and
infrastructure from these effects.
Water-related risks
The Grand Paris Express covers a wide geographical area, some parts of which are prone to
the risk of flooding due to rivers and streams. Société du Grand Paris has put in place a
flood risk management strategy. This strategy implements voluntary measures, some of which
go beyond the regulatory requirements. These measures are designed to protect structures not
only during the construction phase, but also during the operational phase to protect the network
against large-scale flooding. Construction companies are also fully committed to monitoring
water levels and to developing flood warning and management systems for their structures.
Drought risks
Droughts are likely to lead to land movements. For this reason, risk mitigation strategies
have been integrated into the design of the structures and recommended for buildings near
to worksites.
Temperature change risks
The infrastructure is designed to guarantee operational continuity in challenging weather
conditions and to ensure the “thermal comfort” of passengers. For example, the ventilation
systems have been designed to be powerful enough to maintain an acceptable temperature
in the network even during high summer.
The green planted areas around the structures help to reduce local ground level temperatures.
This is one of the reasons why Société du Grand Paris has committed to replanting the areas
around the completed structures.
