Measuring concrete sobriety A new booklet introduced into public

procurement contracts allows Société

du Grand Paris to analyse in detail, by type

of concrete, the amount of concrete used

and the amount of greenhouse gases they

emit. This analysis can also be used to

optimise the quantities used.

Société du Grand Paris is

committed to bio-based

materials and processes By signing the “wood and bio-based

materials” pact supported by the

Fibois interprofessional organisation on

5 November 2020, Société du Grand Paris

committed to building 40% of the total

floor space of its urban and real estate

projects in wood and bio-based materials.

Its commitment goes further with the

objective that 70% of its projects be built

with bio-based/geo-based materials.

As the building sector is the second largest

emitter of greenhouse gases in France,

the use of wood and bio-based materials

will have a significant impact on its carbon

footprint.

This eco-design approach will also contribute

to the structuring and development of

the French wood industry by consolidating

demand from programme managers,

which will lead to increased investment

(hemp concrete, straw, etc.).

An environmental performance

clause for concrete For its contracts still to be awarded,

Société du Grand Paris has introduced a

new environmental requirement on the use

of concrete. In its specifications, it requires

contractors, for all civil engineering public

contracts, to use concrete that produces

at least 40% fewer emissions than concrete

composed of 100% CEM I. This is estimated

to reduce the total CO2 emissions of the

Grand Paris Express by 20%, i.e. a reduction

of 400,000 tonnes of CO2.

This new clause was included in the six public

tenders launched after October 2020:

package 3 for Line 16, two packages for

Line 15 East, package 2 for Line 15 West,

package 3 for Line 17 and package 3 for

Line 18.

Two examples:

– Contractors’ tender documents

for package 1 of Line 15 East include

requirements for using wood and

bio-based materials in the development

of real estate projects, whose surface

density varies from 30 to 40 kg/m²

depending on the site. These thresholds

are also in line with the quantified

commitments made by Société du

Grand Paris under the Fibois pact.

– The Arcueil-Cachan urban

redevelopment project, developed

in partnership with the town of Cachan,

also has bold ambitions in terms of the

use of bio-based materials, aiming to

achieve level 2 of the Bio-Based Building

label.

The requirements for using wood and

bio-based materials have been included

in the tender documents for the design-build

Lines (15 West and 15 East) and will also be

included in the tender documents for real

estate projects across the rest of the network.
